Struggling to stay motivated as the holidays approach? Worried about replacing that six pack with a spare tyre after over indulging in too many Christmas puddings? Here’s our 4 expert tips on how to stay healthy over the holidays.
- Swap Willpower for Habits
Many people believe they need to rely solely on willpower to be able to stay fit and healthy but this is false. Building a habit will trump willpower and motivation every time.
Willpower isn’t like a switch that you can turn on and off when you want to achieve something. Think of it more like a muscle that can tire when you overuse it. So if you want to go to the gym at the end of your day, but you already used your willpower muscle to get up early that day, to avoid eating that cupcake at mid-morning, your willpower will be too over worked to keep you on track.
Instead build HABITS through daily consistent action. Once that habit is in place, it will become automated and you will be on autopilot…all the way to healthy, happy and lean.
- Phone A Friend
Having a workout buddy is a great way to get ensure you keep up your workouts over the holidays. Commit to each other to work out a couple times a week and then hold each other to that commitment. It makes it more fun and you can have a good ole gas bag as you work out.
- Plan Ahead
Research shows that those who have a clear plan and goal, are more likely to achieve that goal. Think of this way, when you get in a car and drive, if you didn’t know where you were going, how would you ever get there?! No plan and no goal, equals no result!
Spend 10 minutes planning your workout, detail what exercises you will do, how many repetitions and the duration you will spend exercising. And then…do it!
- Make Your Workout Fun
Don’t take life too seriously. Your workout should be fun and creative, focusing on what you enjoy. If you hate working out, keep experimenting until you find exercises or movements that you DO enjoy. Life should be about creating more pleasure for ourselves – not punishing our body and mind with stressful activities.
If you have a smile on your face as you improve your fitness and health, you will release more feel good hormones and you’ll be more likely to be consistent in keeping up your workouts in the long run.
