Kay Mackenzie, is an energetic and much loved fitness instructor here at Blackwood Fitness! With over 41 years under her belt of group fitness instructing, she definitely knows a thing or two! We sat down with Kay to answer a few questions about herself for you to get to know her a little better!
What got you interested in becoming a group fitness instructor?
I had danced since I was 3 and always been involved in sport and been active. I think it’s a great way to keep fit and so much fun in a group, high energy, motivating, the music and movement.
How long have you been instructing?
Wait for it—– 41 years! J and I LOVE it!
What’s your favourite class to teach and why?
I haven’t got a favourite, I teach 10 classes a week and I relate well to all my groups and have a connection. I teach my own choreography ( don’t be scared by that word) I like to entertain and have a lot of fun while getting fit, and keeping people mobile for life. It is so rewarding and we Instructors are helping and changing people’s lives in many ways by engaging, inspiring and motivating to enhance their lives.

What else do you do when you’re not leading fitness classes?
I work at Active Ageing Australia part time as the Education and Training Officer
I run a charity with a friend – Knit a Care Square, we get the Community involved in knitting blankets for the homeless and needy. Check us out on Facebook.
Advice or tips to get the most out of your classes?
I think it’s important to Cross Train, mix it up a bit, do some cardio, might be group fitness,, some weights and yoga or pilates, also work your brain do some choreographed classes, research is showing that this is important and can help slow down the ageing process.
Any other interesting facts about yourself?
I have a beautiful husband, 2 gorgeous dogs, a great family and amazing friends.
I love playing games
I have been involved in Sport Aerobics as a competitor, a coach and a judge.
I like the simple things, good food and wine, dancing, sport, socialising with friends, travel and movies
