What is High Intensity Interval Training & Why do we like it?
HIIT – or High Intensity Interval Training is a style of fitness training where intense exercise efforts are interspersed with rest periods. There are several reasons why recently it has become very popular these being:
- It can, over the long term, be easier to continue with a short, high-intensity, intermittent workout scheme than a more frequent, longer workout with less intensity
- It can quickly improve overall fitness both aerobically and anearobically
- It can burn fat and calories for a longer period of time than non-interval based workouts
- It can take longer for your body to reach the burnout point
Put simply, in a shorter amount of time and for less times in a weekly period you can burn more fat, get fitter and live a healthier life.
How Should We Use It?
There are several ways to include High Intensity Interval Training in your training program. Due to it’s intense nature, it is recommended that before starting you seek advice from a qualified personal trainer, as well as modifying the intensity to suit your level and ability, then working your way up. In order to get the best results without increasing the risk of injury, it is ideal to complete two to three High Intensity sessions per week. These sessions are physically taxing so it’s important to conduct them with at least one days rest in between to allow sufficient recovery time. As in all training sessions, it is vital to include a good warm up and cool down. Warm ups should gradually increase intensity so that your body is properly prepared for the high level of work to follow. Cool downs should gradually bring your heart rate back to resting level and include stretches for all the arts of your body that have been trained during the session.
