Choosing a personal trainer or a Coach is a decision that should not be taken lightly. Ideally, there are a number of essential elements that your personal trainer or coach should have. Whilst the choice of a personal trainer ultimately comes down to personal preference, the five points below are what I feel are important to look for in a personal trainer.
5 things to look for in a coach:
You must be able trust your trainer. Trust is difficult to gain, but so easy to lose. For example, if your personal trainer isn’t doing what they said they would do; or comments negatively about other clients, gyms or trainers; then you have to ask yourself, is that Personal Trainer or Coach going to be in the right frame of mind/mindset to be able to motivate you.
It is important that your trainer displays a professional approach at all times. At times it’s good to have a laugh and a bit of a joke but at the end of the day you are paying for a service and it’s important to stay focused on your health and fitness goals!
3. Training credentials
Your personal trainer must have the relevant education, and/or experience. Think about what you really want from your personal trainer! Do you want more focus on your Nutrition? Does this trainer / Coach have a qualification in that area. Do you want to focus on program periodisation? Does this trainer understand correct program design? Research your potential trainer before engaging them. A good personal trainer will keep their skills fresh and on display.
All clients like to develop and gain fast results. However, in reality, achieving your goals will always take more time than expected. Hence, patience is required by a personal trainer. It is a long journey that you and the trainer are about to embark on with each other, enjoy the experience.
5. Communication Skills
If your personal trainer has good communication skills this can help a client break through barriers. As a client, you will face barriers that need crossing in order to achieve your goals. These barriers may present themselves as either physical, or mental challenges a good trainer/ coach will be by your side and help you over come such tasks!
