I’m sure, like me, many of you have been let down by a disloyal gym buddy who has a long list of fantastic excuses as to why they can’t go to the gym with you today. Or maybe you’re the one who’s making the excuses? Either way, it needs to stop. No longer can we be stood up at the turnstile. No longer can we make up crappy excuses to stay in bed for an extra 30 minutes. Not just to preserve our friendships but because training with a buddy is SO DAMN GOOD FOR YOU! And I’m going tell you why…
Committing to meet your gym buddy at a certain time means you are far less likely to talk yourself out of going. It’s harder to let someone else down! Stanford University even found that by just talking to someone once a fortnight about how your exercise regime is going, you can increase your adherence by 78%!
The more you are showing up and keeping up with your gym buddy, the better your results will be! Having a buddy to encourage you to add that little bit of extra weight or do that extra rep will help you reach your goals. One study even shows that you’ll burn 41 calories more than if you workout by yourself!
3. INJURY PREVENTION
Having a gym buddy who is there to correct your form during exercises is a great way of preventing injuries. It also means you have someone to spot you when you push harder to lift heavier weights!
Studies show that individuals work up to 200% harder during a workout when they are training with someone is fitter than them. Healthy competition!
During your workout is a great time to talk over your day and problems, kill two birds with one stone by talking it out and working it out!
Trying new things is easier when you have someone with you. Generally you will have different strengths and knowledge about training which will help keep things interesting.
7. AFFORD A PERSONAL TRAINER
Splitting the price of a Personal Trainer between two of you makes it more affordable and just as effective! It will also be more fun and enable you to learn more about how to reach your goals and train efficiently!
I hope all the reasons outlined above will make you reconsider sending that cancellation text your gym buddy next time you want to bail because it’s not just yourself that you are letting down!
