What type of gym goer do you think you are? Are you hard core, or an easy rider? Most of our members are easy riders, who come here because they want to exercise… not because they are after specific results. Let’s look at this in more detail.
The Three Categories of Gym-Goers
At the risk of generalising, I think gym people fit into 3 categories. Obviously, these are not set in concrete and there are big grey areas which fit between the 3 categories. However, in general I see most gym members fitting into one of the following:
- Hard Core
These people come to the gym to work hard, sweat, and ‘feel the burn’. They enjoy exercise and make it an essential part of their weekly routine. They will be disappointed if they go home without feeling totally exhausted, weak in the legs and dripping in sweat. These people tend to come to the gym more in the evenings, have busy lives and limited time to spend at the gym. They want ‘bang for their buck’ and quick results. Their aim is to get fitter or stay fit, burn calories and tone up.
- Easy Riders
These people live a pretty non active life and come to the gym to satisfy their basic exercise requirement. They are conscious of needing to exercise to stay healthy but don’t really enjoy it. They want their time at the gym to give them the exercise they need without it hurting too much. They want classes which are achievable and don’t like being yelled at and pushed too hard. They are more likely to exercise if it is fun and they can have a laugh. They look for the social side of gym life to keep their motivation and often come with a friend. They are more likely to exercise during the day or on the weekend.
These people use their time at the gym to achieve balance in their life. They understand the concept that a healthy mind means a healthy body. These people are looking for classes which provide calm and balance to their life outside the gym. The times in which they are willing to come to the gym and attend classes are flexible. However, they attend their classes like clockwork, several times a week. The outcomes they are looking for are more connected to their state of mind which in turn benefits their external outlook and appearance.
In general, the largest proportion of our population fits into the second category: Easy riders. As an instructor, my biggest challenge, and the challenge of my team of instructors, is to appeal to these people. If we can make classes fun and achievable for these people, who don’t really like exercise, we have a chance of pushing them into the first category. Our class numbers will build and Group Fitness will continue to be a strong part of Blackwood Fitness.
Group Fitness Suits All Types
When designing the Group Fitness timetable, it is important for me to understand the requirements and needs of these groups. Understanding this means classes are catering for the needs of people at specific times of the day. Classes such as Straight and Strong, Body Attack and Pump are going to attract ‘hard core’ people and are going to be more successful during the evening time slots. Classes which are more light hearted and have an element of fun such as Drum Ball, Sculpt and Aerosculpt appeal more to the ‘easy riders’ and are more successful during the weekends and in the morning timeslots. Yoga, Pilates, ChiBall and Mind Body Balance go really well during the morning and daytime.
Group fitness is a great way of making exercise enjoyable and achievable to a large proportion of our members. People can come into class, switch off their brain and let the instructor direct them towards their fitness goals, whatever they may be. If my instructors make the people in their classes’ fitter, healthier and happier, they are successful. If our members are happy, my instructors are happy. It’s a win-win situation.
