I love seeing young people taking an interest in exercise. Working out, and staying fit and at a healthy weight is so important. There are way too many overweight kids out there and if kids show an interest, it’s important for us to nurture this, encourage it. It helps kids begin a healthy way of life.
This said it is important to recognise that some exercises are not appropriate for young growing bodies. Lifting weights are not advisable for growing bodies and require close monitoring and technique coaching.
POLICY FOR AGE LIMITS IN GROUP FITNESS
This policy is designed for the use of parents of young children attending the Blackwood Fitness- 2017
Blackwood Fitness recognizes the need for people to exercise, no matter their age. We encourage and advocate a healthy lifestyle for all age groups. We congratulate all individuals undertaking a safe exercise and endeavour to assist in any way we can.
It is important as Group Fitness instructors we show a duty of care and provide or restrict exercise depending on member’s age and ability. This is important in order to provide a safe exercise environment for people in our classes at all times.
While teaching, Blackwood Fitness Instructors are not required to provide supervision to underage members. Therefore, adult supervision is recommended in classes for members under the age of 15 years. If a child comes to class they must participate. We do not permit children sitting around the sides of the room.
Appropriate classes for children
For young children up to the age of 15 years, Blackwood Fitness Group Fitness Management suggests children choose classes with a focus on cardio fitness. This includes Body Attack, HIIT IGT or Aerosculpt. When using weights, we suggest light resistance and controlled movements, with a special emphasis on proper technique and safety. Some strength training exercises using body weight or small hand weights is acceptable – classes include Sculpt, Barre Flex or BBarreless. For improved flexibility, core and mind and body awareness kids could try Yoga, Pilates or Mind Body & Balance.
Body Pump for children
Due to the level of weight and high repetition of exercises, Body Pump is not recommended for children under 15 as it is difficult for the instructor to administer individual technique instruction. If children do choose to attend Pump it is suggested the class is undertaken with a bar without weights.
Blackwood Fitness Instructors and Management reserves the right to request children who are disruptive, rude or inattentive leave the class.
