Group Fitness can make your perform better and we have the proof!
Working out in a group tends to make you try harder. Setting higher goals, and giving a bit more effort is easier when you are not by yourself.
A study completed by Brandon Irwin, at Michigan State University, found that group exercise is more motivating. This is because people don’t like to feel inadequate.
“People like to exercise with others and make it a social activity,” Irwin said. “We found that when you’re performing with someone who you perceive as a little better than you, you tend to give more effort than you normally would alone.”
The study translates well into the benefits of group exercise in comparison to working out in the CV room or in the gym.
A common comment we hear from our group fitness attendants about classes is that they enjoy the motivation and extra push they get from group exercise. When coming to a class, they are made accountable for the duration of the class. They are encouraged by the instructor and others in the class to work to their full potential, and the temptation to leave after 15-30 mins is taken away.
Often on a treadmill, people give up because they get bored. When work outs are boring, they become a lot harder. This article here talks about why this is the case.
But you don’t just need to push through the boredom to get fit and healthy; the easiest way to fitness is to have fun! Group fitness classes are fun and motivating, which makes people more likely to come back and do it again. It feels less like hard work and more like a social activity.
Classes help foster friendships and social groups. People work well in groups, are more motivated and more accountable for how hard they work. Building 3-5 Group fitness classes into weekly routine will guarantee results… often without you even realising it!
