Group Fitness Instructor Certification & Assessments

Once a year, you will see myself, Kylie and Bianca in group classes conducting instructor assessments. This is an annual process that makes sure our instructors are teaching the classes in a safe, confident and proficient manner.
We try to give our instructors encouragement, and constructive advice on, class improvement. The assessment process is also really important to ensure the classes at Blackwood Fitness are consistent. For example, if someone goes to a Sculpt class with Kay it will be similar to one taught by Bianca.
When I proposed the group fitness instructor certification & assessment month, the instructors were really excited. They asked repeatedly about when they would be assessed, and who would be assessing them. The instructors have really loved this process and are hungry for advice and direction.
I believe this is a real indication of how lucky we are here to have such a great team. There is no arrogance about already knowing everything and not wanting to take on advice. No one is ever perfect. Understanding that there is always more to learn, that every instructor has something to share, is a great attribute. It’s something I look for in an instructor.
Learning is life-long. I encourage the instructors to observe each others classes, to share ideas, and to learn from each other. That is what makes our instructor team so strong, and Group Fitness one of our gym’s biggest strengths.
As group fitness instructors, we work as a team and all get along. We have a very low turn-over of instructor staff. I hope this is an indication of people being happy in their jobs. Hopefully, this bond is reflected in all of the classes taught at Blackwood Fitness.
