With a lot of us spending more time sitting at a desk all day or slouching on a couch for that tv series marathon, bad posture has become a troublesome issue to deal with. But what is good posture, why is it important and how does it affect us?
Posture refers to the body’s ability at dealing with the ever-present force of gravity. When we’re standing, sitting or lying down gravity exerts force on our joints, ligaments and muscles. Good posture is when your body distributes the force of gravity through the body so no one structure is overstressed. This affects how you walk, run, jump, lift weights or execute other skills. Good posture has many benefits such as good balance of muscle strength and proper positioning of the spine and improved internal organ function.
Over time, the stress of poor posture can change the shape of your spine, leading to possibly constricted nerves and blood vessels. Being aware of your posture is the first step to working more efficiently with less fatigue and strain on your body’s ligaments and muscles.
